“Bird Diseases I have loved – challenges of an avian vet”

The March General Meeting will be held on March 6, 2020 at the School of Arts Hall, Cnr of Thynne and Wynnum Roads, Morningside. Doors will open at 6:30pm for a 7:30pm start. The QFS and Australian Wildlife Supplies product sales tables will operate from 6:30pm – 7:30pm.

Our main speaker is Dr Bob Doneley a leading avian vet who has a wealth
of experience relevant to your bird collection. Bob graduated from the
University of Queensland in 1982, and worked in veterinary practices in
Bundaberg, Brisbane, Toowoomba and the UK, but is now head of veterinary
medicine at University of Queensland, Gatton. Bob developed his interest
in bird medicine shortly after graduation when he realised he had been
taught very little about birds. He was eventually registered as
Queensland’s first specialist in bird medicine and was awarded his
Fellowship (FACVSc) in 2003. He now lectures to numerous veterinary
students on bird and exotic animal medicine and has published two
textbooks on bird medicine. Bob’s presentation will focus on how to take
a holistic approach to maintaining the health of your collection and
will draw on his long experience in avian medicine. It will be highly
informative. The meeting commences with a short talk on Diamond
Firetails from local breeder, Mick Hampson. Come along!

Meeting commences at 7:30pm

For the first meeting of 2020 we will have a series of short talks providing practical tips for finch aviculture. We will have three presenters with Peter James presenting a popular talk and demonstration on applying leg rings to finches. It may seem easy to old timers, but lots of newer members need some help. Second up will be Chris Leeper with a short presentation on hand rearing finches and finally Gary Fitt will give some instruction on novel nesting receptacles you might try in your aviary. Finally we will have a Q&A session where anyone can pose a question to a panel of experts. So bring your questions and your problems. It should be a great night.

“A tour through the birds of the Walsrode Bird Park, Germany”.

Last year our Editor, Sheena, spent an extended period in Europe and found time to visit a few bird collections. Among them was the famed World Bird Park (Weltvogelpark) at Walsrode in Germany. This is the largest bird park in the world in terms of number of species and area. Only Jurong Bird Park in Singapore has more individual birds. Many of us would love to visit, but luckily Sheena is a keen photographer and she has captured images of many of the birds and of the layout of Walsrode. In this presentation Sheena will give her impression of the park, discuss the birds and some of the history to whet our appetites. An interesting meeting for sure.

Our meeting will commence with a Short Talk from Alan Hazleton on “My Different Aviaries”. This will be an introduction prior to an Aviary visit to Alan’s place on April 7.
