Mark Jolly is a highly experienced aviculturist who followed his Grandfather into the hobby. He caught the bug early and has been breeding and chasing birds ever since. He has kept and bred a wide variety of waterfowl, pheasants, finches, parrots and Softbills! He also bred, exhibited and judged poultry mostly standard Old English Game.

Mark will discuss his current collection, which he maintains with considerable help from his wife, Jennifer. Among the finches are Red Faced and Yellow winged Pytilias, Bluecaps, Orange Cheek Waxbills, Fawn and normal Plumheads, Yellow bodied Stars, Normal Masks and Diggles.

Softbills comprise 3 species of Robin, 3 species of fairy wrens, Scarlet Honeyeaters, Golden Whistlers and both White fronted and Crimson Chats. Mark’s talk will outline how he manages this diverse collection to meet the needs of all the species. It will be fascinating.

“Bird Keeping and the importance of Record Keeping”

November is our AGM and so we will have some reporting and formality to completed. After that our speaker will be David Boyd coming in via Zoom from Sydney.

David originates from New Zealand where he studies Zoology and Natural Resource Management and then moved to Sydney in 1988 over thirty years ago. David kept finches and canaries in New Zealand from a very young age. Once in Australia his boys had finches and when David later moved to acreage just outside Sydney, he was able to build his current excellent aviary setup. In this talk David will provide a tour of his aviaries and the collection of finches he now keeps. However, David will also present some thoughts on record keeping for finch keepers which could benefit the whole hobby. This will be an interesting presentation.

“Weeds and Greens for Birds”
Martin Thorn is long standing President of the Beenleigh Bird Breeders Club in Brisbane and has been keeping birds since he was 12. He loves all birds and although he has concentrated largely on parrots he has dabbled with a few finches from time to time. He describes himself as a dedicated bird club man and he loves to share his knowledge with others. The topic of his talk is relevant to all bird breeders. A variety of greenfood is important for success with finches and parrots and Martin will work through the range of plants you can use. We will also have a short talk from Grant Shaw describing the small aviaries he builds for tight situations. The meeting will be face to face at Morningside and also on ZOOM for members. This will be a great meeting. Be there if you can.

A review of Australian breeding techniques for the Red Siskin

Our July general meetings will again be presented via the on-line ZOOM platform. Our first ZOOM meeting in June was a great success. QFS members for whom we have an email will receive a link which will bring you into the July meeting. Members that do not receive a link can email President@qfs.org.au

Our main speaker will be Sam Davis from Sydney. Sam is currently President of the Canary and Cage Bird Federation of Australia (CCBFA) and Editor for the Finch Society of Australia in Sydney. He is very active in government liaison around issues for aviculture and is now the Cagebird representative on Animal Care Australia as well. Sam actively communicates the strengths, achievements and potential of aviculture to the general public, government and the zoo community. Aviculture has been a lifelong passion for Sam. As a child he bred and exhibited budgerigars. He has kept a broad range of finches, quail, and parrots over the years. After moving onto acreage Sam constructed a number of larger aviaries housing numerous finch species, some parrots and in recent years a range of softbills. One area of personal interest to Sam is including private aviculturists in endangered species work and he has assembled information on how Australian breeders achieve success with the Red Siskin, a CITES 1 listed endangered species in South America. In this talk Sam will present a review of what he learnt. I hope you can ZOOM in to the meeting.
