“Challenges and rewards fromm a mixed collection”

Main Speaker: Ian Brown

This meeting will comprise some opening comments from President, Ian Brown, including a discussion about meeting start times. The QFS Committee believes a 7pm start is too early and will propose moving back to 7.30pm start. The general meeting will be followed by two speakers:

A short talk from Jane Purcell on “Compatibility of finch species and other birds”, drawing on her experiences with a free flying bird collection in her house followed by the main talk by:

Ian Brown on “Challenges and Rewards of a mixed collection – Version 5″

This month our main speaker is QFS President, Ian Brown. Ian has been keeping and breeding birds for almost 50 years starting when his family moved to a farm south of Sydney at the age of 11. Since then he has never been without birds and over the last ten years his collection has evolved to include Finches, Parrots, Fruit Pigeons and now a growing array of Softbills. This includes many honeyeaters, bower birds, wrens and the magnificent Wompoo pigeon.

Over the years, having to work full time has required Ian to find ways of housing and feeding his birds in a very efficient and time saving manner, keeping in mind the need to optimise nutritional benefits for good breeding results and healthy birds. Ian’s presentation will outline the numerous challenges and rewards which come with a mixed and diverse collection, particularly the need to optimise the feeding regime to ensure appropriate and highly nutritional diets. This is a talk that Ian first gave many years ago, but it and the collection have evolved since then and you can be sure to learn and enjoy much. See you there or on Zoom.

At the moment this meeting will be LIVE and by ZOOM. Current COVID requirements will mean widely spaced seating and masks MUST be worn in the meeting hall.

“How I feed my birds and my routine”

Main Speaker: John McMahon

John has been breeding birds for over 60 years, starting like many of us as a nine year old with budgies. He progressed through many different species and into finches where over time John became well known as a breeder of show quality Zebra Finches and as a judge. A prominent member of the South-East Queensland Zebra Finch Society, John is always keen to pass on his knowledge to younger breeders and has encouraged many into Zebras. In this talk John will discuss and demonstrate his feeding techniques which support excellent breeding and development of quality birds. It should be of interest to all. Note that the meeting is the SECOND Friday in September, see you there or on Zoom.

Times: Viewing of birds from 0900 to 1030, Auction from 10.30.

Entry will be $2, and Auction catalogs available on the day for $1.
Some COVID requirements in place. Masks will be required.
BBQ, Sales tables, memberships all available.

For welfare reasons all birds will be in approved auction boxes. All birds will be vetted prior to the auction. Buyers purchase the birds and the box. No transfer of birds allowed in the hall.

Payments by credit card preferred.

“Learnings from Endangered Species Programs – the role of aviculture and more”

Main Speaker: Glen Holland

Glen Holland is a highly experienced aviculturist and professional wildlife manager with experience in Africa, New Zealand and in Australia. Through his professional career, Glen has been Director of the Auckland Zoo, Curator of Birds at Adelaide Zoo, Director of the famed Healesville Sanctuary and now Director of the Werribee Open Range Zoo in Victoria.

Throughout this time Glen has maintained his interests in aviculture and conservation and has been directly involved in a number of bird conservation programs where specialised techniques have been required. This includes the high profile programs for the Orange Bellied Parrot, Helmeted Honeyeater and Plains Wanderer. Glen is an outstanding and entertaining speaker and this presentation will display Glen’s depth of knowledge of birds in captivity and in the wild. A meeting not to be missed.

The meeting will commence with a short talk from Gary Fitt on “Some outcomes from the 2020 National Finch and Softbill Census”.

“Green Singers – avicultural needs for success”

Our July meeting features Peter McDonald, long time QFS member who has served many roles on the Committee including President. Peter has extensive experience with many types of finches and particularly enjoys his huge free flight aviary which houses many species.

In this talk Peter will focus on the Green Singer and its needs. Green Singers are one of the popular African species in aviculture and as a cup nester they are rather different to grassfinches and waxbills. They are also a stunning songster. Peter will outline how he breeds Green Singers as a means to provide a comprehensive outline of their avicultural needs. Come along to learn.
