The Queensland Finch Society is based in Brisbane, Australia but has members worldwide who subscribe to receive the monthly magazine "Finch News" and participate in other Society activities. Members in south-east Queensland are encouraged to attend general meetings which are normally held on the first Friday of every month at 8pm (doors open 7pm) at Morningside School of Arts Hall, Cnr Wynnum & Thynne Roads, Morningside, Brisbane. They feature a Guest Speaker, a Sales Table stocked with seed and a wide range of breeding aids, birds for sale and the club Library. Non-members and guests are also encouraged to attend. QFS also stages out of Brisbane meetings, aviary visits, bird sales, auctions, bird shows and other events at various times during the year.
Speaker: Dr. Lori Hurley (Macquarie University, NSW)
Dr Lori Hurley is a reproductive physiologist at Macquarie University interested in how environmental and social factors regulate reproduction in finches. Lori s research with Zebras and Longtails seeks to understand how finches deal with extremes of temperature and in the process she has focused on sperm, a fast evolving and diverse cell type, and has developed valuable techniques to collect, visualize and measure finch sperm. While it was once thought that an individual males sperm were stable and consistent, Lori has shown that sperm morphology and performance in an individual can change from dietary, social, and environmental influences. In turn, these changes can impact reproductive success of birds. She will discuss how even short term heat events can negatively impact sperm quality in a heat adapted bird, and why this can limit their reproductive potential. This will be a fascinating talk and may help you understand why your boys don t perform.
Our meeting will commence with a Short Talk from Gary Fitt on DNA Sexing how does it work?
